Breast Conserving Surgery in Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and its incidence is increasing. It has been shown that a woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime.
Especially the Mediterranean Basin, in which we are located, is one of the regions with the highest risk of developing breast cancer in the world. However, thanks to the developments in the surgical and medical treatment of breast cancer in the last 20-30 years, surgeries that preserve breast tissue can be performed and the disease can be easily treated.
These developments have made breast cancer one of the cancers that respond best to treatment. Especially thanks to technological developments and increased screening, breast cancers can now be detected and treated at early stages.
What is Breast Conserving Surgery?
Breast-conserving surgery is the safe removal of the tumor in the breast without leaving any cancer tissue behind. Major surgeries such as mastectomy (removal of the entire breast), which was performed on patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the past, are performed much less frequently today and have been replaced by breast-conserving surgeries that are less painful and have better aesthetic results.
The aim of breast-conserving surgery is to preserve breast tissue at the maximum level and achieve better aesthetic results without compromising oncological principles. In addition, it is aimed to return to normal life earlier and improve the quality of life with less post-operative pain and wound infection. Another positive effect of these surgeries is that they significantly reduce the psychologically devastating effects of a woman losing her breast.
Who Can Have Breast Conserving Surgery?
Breast-conserving surgeries can be performed on all patients who want breast preservation. However, breast-conserving surgery may not be performed in multicentric breast cancers that are distant from each other (cancer in more than one area within the breast), in patients with large tumors but small breast tissue, if the patient is pregnant, and if the patient has collagen tissue disease. However, thanks to developing medical treatments, tumor size can now be reduced by applying chemotherapy in patients with large tumor diameters, and then breast-conserving surgeries can be performed.
Last word
Breast cancer is a disease whose incidence is increasing day by day, but it has many treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and radiotherapy and responds well to these treatments. Thanks to developing surgical and medical treatments, it is now possible to live longer and preserve breast tissue. It should not be forgotten that early diagnosis and treatment not only prolongs life but also facilitates the application of breast-conserving surgeries, providing better aesthetic results and an earlier return to normal life.
